Melbourne for progressive stayer
15 Apr 2015

Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young have had a change of plan for their Rotorua winner Gifted Lad.

The Cambridge trainers had considered a tilt at the $A600,000 Gr.1 Queensland Derby on June 6 for the son of Zabeel, but they are now keener on a Melbourne option.

“We’re looking at taking him to Flemington for the VRC St Leger on May 25, he is better-suited to left-handed racing,” Young said.

“We’ll see how he comes through this race and if he does well then we’ll look at getting him on a plane the Wednesday before the race.”

The Goodwood graduate Gifted Lad beat the older horses in his lead-up to the Gr.1 New Zealand Derby and he was given a break after an unplaced run in the Ellerslie classic.

“We gave him 10 days off after that and we would have been disappointed if he hadn’t been able to win at Rotorua,” Young said.
